Firefox 135 ditching Do Not Track mode

Post by Grogan »

When Firefox 135 is released in February, it'll ship with one less feature: Mozilla plans to remove the Do Not Track toggle from its Privacy and Security settings.

The DNT toggle is already gone in the nightly developer release of Firefox 135, and Mozilla recently updated its Firefox support page for the privacy feature to indicate it'll be gone for good once 135 is generally available, which is planned for February 4, 2025.

As many have pointed out, however, and Mozilla reiterated, the optional nature of DNT means few websites actually honor the user's request not to track their activity.

"Many sites do not respect this indication of a person's privacy preferences, and, in some cases, it can reduce privacy," Mozilla said on the updated DNT support page. It directs users to instead make use of newer Global Privacy Control features also present in the browser.

I have never used that, but I don't care about tracking... it just makes it easier for them to find my ass, so they can kiss it. I turn off most privacy settings, and accept all cookies (and just clear them when I think of it). If I want actual privacy, I'll do a Hell of a lot more than "request" that websites don't track me.

Seeing as Firefox has been displaced by Chrome to such a degree, I doubt many or even any sites would care about honoring those firefox-only "Do Not Track" requests.

Yeah it's more privacy theater than anything. I have used Mozilla's Facebook Container for many years in an attempt to isolate FB, but I've noticed something weird recently. I've only had contact with my realtor in AZ via email (once by phone), yet she sometimes appears on Facebook as a friend suggestion. A similar thing happened with my contact at the solar company, I've only had email contact with her, but I came up as a friend suggestion for her on FB. But of course I don't know what their habits might be, my realtor uses Gmail, and like most normies she probably uses their webmail rather than an email client, so that could be the source there.

Yes, Faecesbook has tentacles. It probably scraped their address books or something and their algorithms match people like that. It didn't take me long to get the creeps during the short time I was on it.
