Call of Duty: Black Ops

Post by Zema Bus »

It was great playing against Grogan, DA, and Troy tonight in the original Black Ops lol! I decided to see how that is under Proton, it's the one that names the MP bots after the names in your Steam friends list. It's working really well, though the mouse controls need some adjusting. I always liked that snowy mountaintop map.

You'll probably find that every other time it doesn't work right... horrid performance. Quit and try again. At least that's the way it was last time I tried it. Black Ops 2 was like that. Ghosts was worse, I could probably play 2 bot maps and then have to quit and restart it.

I've been playing World at War (campaign). Some old school rifle shooting. My favourite is the Russian parts. That and Cod 4 always worked perfectly.

By the way man, if you get the time, the first Call of Duty Black Ops has a really good campaign. You'd probably enjoy that more now, being desensitized to the shit sandwiches (with mayonnaise) of modern day games. It ties in with the COD WaW campaign too (commander Reznov) and there's a retro chapter where you're in the arctic with bolt action WWII rifles and stuff.

These campaigns aren't long, and they aren't engaging for long periods of time :-)

P.S. I just had a brilliant idea. Download Call of Duty Black Ops for tonight.

These games don't even take up significant disk space.

I played through the Bay of Pigs part, escaped from the Russian Gulag and quit after the cut scenes following that (at the Pentagon and stuff). It did take those performance spells I was speaking of, but with beefier hardware, I can just play through them until it clears up. It will happen again, but not a big deal and clears up etc.

It's fairly exhilarating gun play, especially if you pick up an AK-47. They made it feel kind of jumpy like a real one in this game.

The campaign ran great, until the second I successfully escaped the Russian gulag, got an achievement and then it immediately froze.

Just a game crash type freeze? (able to get out of it without losing your session or hardware state etc.)

I didn't have any trouble with it, just the performance spells. I turned everything up and also turned on shader warming (pre-compiling during level load)

Yeah just the game that froze, my session was intact, I only had to kill the game.

I didn't notice any performance issues, this was on my Ryzen machine so different hardware.

I had a nice time with this tonight up until I quit, the game went to a white screen and froze/quit after "Save and Exit" and I had to flip over to ctrl+alt+f2 to manually kill the game. At least it didn't happen in my game :-)
