Red Dead Redemption 2

Post by Grogan »

I'm not keen on Rockstar's games, but this is on for $20 ($27.95 CAD for the Ultimate Edition) until June 2. I think these games are more RPG'ish than their others so hopefully I'll play it. I had to remove big games to make room, so I'd better.

It's still downloading and I haven't tried it, but it looks good at protondb. Hopefully it'll run with my best proton tool (proton-tkg with upstream wine 10.8 and ntsync) but if not I have others, and as a last resort, the various steam protons to choose from.

Yes, it does work with my proton-tkg wine 10.8 ntsync. I had a bit of nonsense at first with the Rockstar Game Launcher faeces, it stalled on "preparing to install" on first run, but I killed it and tried it again and it downloaded and installed the latest Rockstar client, hooked up with my Steam account (it did make me verify my account with an emailed code though) and then launched the game.

It looks good and works well. Ultra settings for everything.

I'm not sure if I like it yet though, so far it's mostly been riding horses in snow storms and I don't seem all that free to play my game. One part I had to shoot an outlaw gang at this house we came across, we needed supplies and they were bad people anyway, so... heheh.

Glad to hear that one works with Proton. I saw the game play a few years ago, it looked really good. Once you're past the early part of the game you'll be on your own and can free roam from what I remember.

I haven't got that far, but logically it seems that after this train robbery (I'm sure it goes bad) I can predict that the group I'm with (outlaws, as well as some ordinary people, families we're protecting) will be disbanded and the game will open up. The game made me do some stupid shit, like find food, track and hunt deer, but also we stormed the enemy camp and killed everyone and took their train robbery map

I went ahead and got it before I forget. I only got the base game after reading what little extra content comes with the Ultimate Edition.

I didn't even read, I just always go for the deluxe/ultimate because I want the DLC :-)

What I hate is when you get a deluxe and it's just artwork and soundtrack. Very few games have music I'd want to hear outside the game.

Well, I can't get in to this game, it's too disrespectful of my time. After 3 hours of game play, it's STILL stupid shit like find food for the (new) camp, eat food, get my beard trimmed (no shit, one of my objectives is to find a barber in the nearest town to where we've camped)

After the train robbery, where I got a few bearer bonds and not much else, the game made me drive a slow wagon all the way to the new camp. It even made me get off and fix the wheel, press E to pick the broken wheel off the ground, press E again to put it back on the wagon. Then another 10 minutes of slow wagon driving. Pressing shift makes the horses go a little faster, but not much.

Then I get to camp and it's "eat food" and "your beard is getting long, find a barber". So I go to find some food (hunt game) and I get yelled at "Hey, don't ride through here!" and I have to find another way out of the camp. Then I just get going, looking for some deer and it's crack-a-boom, a big thunderstorm and I can't see a thing.

The combat is clumsy third person and rudimentary (point the dot and fire), like a typical Rockstar game too. I don't see much to look forward to here. If after 3 hours the game hasn't opened up, it's lost on me. This is one game where a 2 hour refund eligibility period isn't enough.

P.S. Not only that, I had trouble with that Rockstar client the other night after a new build of proton-tkg. It was opening, connecting, the game was going through some load screens and then it was kicking me out with a connection error 17 because the Rockstar Social Club service was failing. I got it working again by switching to a different proton (forcing updating of the wine prefix) which caused the then broken client to reinstall from the bundled client and update itself again. I think the client gets broken when the wine prefix is updated. While I didn't get the error 17, it STILL kicked me out and said I was "not eligible" to play Red Dead Redemption 2 on this Rockstar account. I tried again and it worked after that (at least once, I haven't played it again since). So the Rockstar client IS a problem after all.
