The Outer Worlds Spacers Choice Edition

Post by Grogan »

I was going through the GoG catalogue today, and came across this. I've looked at The Outer Worlds before, but it looked stupid so I didn't bite. This is an Unreal 4/Directx12 remaster of that 2019 game, so it still looks stupid, but it has nicer graphics

It's actually pretty good, it's very Fallout-like. My kind of RPG. It's first person too.

I don't see a way to make screenshots, but there are a few there (Steam has the exact same ones). It's more fantasy-like graphics than realistic, but it looks good and plays well.

So far, I've emerged from cryo, awakened by this criminal scientist type guy. There are hundreds of colonists in cryo on this abandoned ship, and this guy wants to wake them to overthrow the board (it's a corporate run colony). We need resources to wake the cryo pods.

He shoots me down to a planet where I'm to meet this rogue'ish ship captain, but he died in a freak accident. I have to go into town to find a power regulator, and the only way to get a regulator is to divert power from this hydroponics lab occupied by deserters (from the company). This kills their little community and essentially would force them back to the cannery. That was a terrible thing to do, so I end up killing the tyrannical boss of this "Saltuna" cannery, who has the colonists essentially enslaved. I put the deserter leader in charge (she was horrified though, and paid me to leave them alone lol). It wasn't my only option, but I hate people like that.

Now I'm in my ship, with a side kick I picked up on the planet (the cannery's engineer/mechanic) heading for a rendezvous with a black market dealer that can get me a key card that I'm going to need.

It looks very interesting, in a way it seems like a cross between Fallout and Saints Row the Third when I see that guy with the big smiley round head running around with a gun - like the ones in Saints Row the Third wearing bunny suites. Well, if my house ever sells for real I may pick this one up.

More like a cross between Fallout and Bioshock. Same kind of zany dystopian atmosphere, with ridiculous products and advertisements.

I played this for 5 hours tonight, it's keeping my interest.

Something funny. On that space station where I have to get a docking navcard pass (restricted landing pads won't let you land without codes), I was informed that my ship was impounded by the Board, until such time as they release it. I thought I was going to have a problem, as I did some heavy shit down on the planet and the Board should indeed want a piece of me. I'm to talk to this Board representative to see why my ship was impounded. Turns out, he's madly in love with the ship's former captain, and I'm not him. He impounded the ship so the captain would be forced to go and talk to him, sort of thing. I inform him that he's dead, and he's all sad and asks me "does he keep my picture by his bedside". I lied and said oh yes, and he was all melancholy and said he was sorry to trouble me and released my ship

Well, this turned out to be a real gem. It wasn't that long, really, I only spent about 44 hours on it including DLC, but it was very good. I liked all of it. I did take a lot of expedient choices, like "just kill people and take it" and probably could have spent a bit more time, but oh well :-)

I concentrated my skill points in weapons, hacking, lockpicking and persuade and intimidate conversation choices. There wasn't much I couldn't do. (a few hacks and lockpicks where my skill wasn't high enough but they weren't important).

I could have had the original game if I didn't judge it by its looks, but it was good that this was new for me.

I highly recommend it. I might post a review on GoG.
