I hadn't started a new playthrough in the better part of a year (and had removed the game in a blitz to free up space) and I missed this game. In the years I've had it, and the many times I've started a new game, I've never finished it because of a mandatory race that I could never win. The vehicle was too hard to control around a tight looped, dirt track and I was wiping out. There was still a lot of fun gameplay (including the expansion) as you can still do everything else except progress to the end. (Apex Avalanche engine, similar to Far Cry 3+ style of game play)
I never tried the race on this hardware, and it was much better. It was lagged responsivity on the old computer in that race that was the problem. I didn't have trouble driving in the game, but a race with a bunch of other moving vehicles is more hardware intensive. It didn't let me use my own vehicle either, which handled better for me, so I was fucked.
I got it on the first try, moreover, I was so far ahead of them I could have gotten out to piss and still could have won. It was only one race, not four either... I had just assumed it was 4, because the arena challenge was 4 events (pretty easy and zany), and also the race in the first Rage game was 4 events to win (but it let you use your own upgraded vehicle).
I did it early in game, and now I can enjoy the whole rest of the game knowing I'm actually going to be able to finish it this time. I've already seen parts of the game I've never seen before, because I wasn't able to progress that one leader's quest line.
This is among my favourite games ever, an anomaly in that normally a game I can't or won't finish goes in the scrap heap.

Re: Rage 2 revisited
I last played it 4 years ago according to Steam. I remember being stuck at one quest because I wasn't leveled up enough or the equivalent of that and needed to do other stuff first. I meant to get back to it but just never did. But I did have a lot of fun in that game.
Re: Rage 2 revisited
When you have time for gaming again, you'll have to give this another try. I'm not sure how far you got, but there's a lot more than that desert terrain. Lush areas with crumbling cities, Authority bases with science fictiony tech, a creepy swamp area with mutant swamp rednecks and stuff
That quest line I couldn't do before led to a big Authority base where I had to steal a fusion cell to power this tank vehicle I got from the quest (It is what's needed for the end). That was a really good quest.

Re: Rage 2 revisited
After 5 years, I finally got to finish this game! The end quest was a bit Authority facility that I had to drive through with a tank, and shoot at sentry guns and enemies for a few km. That part was so Quake 4 (IdSoftware... figures).
Part of the facility I got to see for the first time:
Me choking and killing the big bad boss at the end, and infecting him with a nanobot virus (jammed in his eye!) so he can't be re-cloned
