Sniper Elite Resistance

Post by Grogan »

Sniper Elite Resistance was released on Steam today. It's not Karl this time, but a different Special Operations sniper, Harry Hawker. It's set in France just like Sniper Elite 5 and uses the same engine, so it should work the same.

I grabbed it, but it's taking hours to download 68 Gb so I won't get to test it until later now. Steam downloads are like trying to piss kidney stones through a priapism nowadays for me. (spiky Mb/s, Kb, Mb, 0, Mb, Kb, Mb, 0 sort of thing if I look at a real time network monitor that isn't averaging it like the Steam graph). I'm getting tired of their crappy network programming, to the point that I think twice "do I really want this game?" By the time it finishes downloading I don't even want it anymore lol

I'll have more to say about it later, but I always enjoy Sniper Elite games and I'm glad to have a new one.

So far so good. It's the same game engine, but it's just DirectX 12 this time, no Vulkan renderer option. I don't see why they wouldn't just use Vulkan, it's a free and open API and all. I suppose all that matters is that it works well though.

Other than that, it's the same as Sniper Elite 5 to play. The first mission is to blow up a dam. Destroy AA guns and sabotage a pump to build pressure, so a bomber can come and drop a bomb and take it out. That's as far as I got, the second mission is infiltrating some Nazi occupied fortress.

Here's a couple of screenshots. Like Sniper Elite 5, it looks good but not fantastic, moreover, I'd say it looks a bit cheap like their second round of addon maps in SE5. They re-used a lot of assets and cobbled them together in different ways. It feels more like props than immersion in some places.

When the happy day comes that you have time for games again, you'll have better ways to spend your time and money than this game. I'm enjoying it because I like these games, but I feel like a chump for being ripped off.

As I started to say, a lot of it is composed of cobbled together existing assets and looks stupid. In the second map, there's a round library. The bookshelves all look like fake bookshelf veneer, and they are all identical, side by side all around this room. The support pillars look stupid, too thin to be real and stuff like that. There are a few more realistic looking ones later in game, but they are dark maps.

The game is short, even with time wasting crap like searching for stupidly hidden intel and worse, in the final mission the crowbar is hidden very unfairly, I had the whole map cleared and wandered around for probably an hour before I gave up last night. Tonight I went and found a youtube video and it's lying between a body hiding crate and some other non-interactive crates so you can't see the glint even if you walk by it. Not a place where you normally find a crowbar either. Of course, you need it to open and destroy an electrical panel (it's the ONLY way... you can't pry it open with anything else, it's impervious to bullets and explosives). I was finished in 11.5 hours and I took my time!

Not only that, the third mission takes you back to the same area as the first mission, that stupid looking dam (with a breach now). Look how awful this looks, the structure, even the water looks dumb

Because I have the Season Pass I have a kill Hitler mission to do next, but they better put out some damned good DLC for my Season Pass content that knocks my socks off. This might well be my last Sniper Elite game. It's just a money grab while they are working on their next one.

That's sad to hear, seems like a lot of games are doing that lately.

Well, in the previous update they had actually fixed the fugly water in that dam map, and added more crowbars to that final map (when I played it after the first update I was finding crowbars all over the place where they weren't before)

AND, the first season pass DLC map came out today, and it's a really nice, fun map. I'm enjoying the shit out of murdering Nazis in it. Same old objective though, "find and destroy the last of the klein blume" (a chemical weapons agent, the premise of the game. I thought I did destroy the last of it, but I guess this is the last of the last of it lol)

With the fixes in place is this one worth the full price? I'm within 2-3 weeks now :)

It's not the best of the series by any stretch, but it's still a pretty good game. I have played it a lot.
