This one is far from me but the wind is really blowing hard here. The forecast says 80 MPH gusts.

Re: Another Big Fire
That's nasty, fueled by that wind. I'm glad it's far from you.
Oh well, where you're going, sand and rock doesn't burn

While the trumpanzees blame "Gavin Newscum" (that's what Trump called him publicly), Democrats and lesbian fire fighters, the real reason for the hydrants going dry is good old PG&E cutting the power. No power, no pumps.
Fortunately, it's Biden that's still in power at the moment and he will be providing federal support.

Re: Another Big Fire
Yeah they cut the power in an attempt to eliminate their liability for starting fires but I guess it's not their problem if that makes it harder to fight fires
The wind is still blowing pretty hard here, it causes constant background stress with fires starting all over the place. I miss the days when I could enjoy a windy night. A lot of these fires are caused by arsonists who get off by all the destruction and death they unleash.

Re: Another Big Fire
That's pretty sick, to cause that on purpose. What a lovely society.
Easy enough to cause by accident. I heard of one of them set off by someone simply driving an ATV.

Re: Another Big Fire
And then after the mandatory evacuations the looters show up and start looting homes. The entire western side of North America is considered higher risk for fires and the eastern side low risk, but California is by far the worst place for fires by a gigantic margin. One of the biggest factors is that when high pressure winds blow out of the desert they travel over multiple mountain ranges, and with each mountain range the air gets progressively drier and drier and hotter. That's why we can often have 80 F temps in the winter with single digit humidity levels. My realtor in AZ said they don't get a lot of strong winds there except during monsoon season (when the humidity is elevated).
Re: Another Big Fire
I haven't heard the term in a long time, but they used to call that chinook winds. Now it's "hydroclimate whiplash" lol
The effect is stronger now because of climate change, but I believe it's the same phenomenon.
I can't say I've ever heard the term monsoon applied to Arizona. I just looked it up and apparently it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to rain, just that it's a major weather change with more winds and humidity, clouds and greater possibility of storms.

Re: Another Big Fire
Here they're called Santa Ana winds
Yeah monsoon season is mainly in July and August, we get some of it here too but not nearly as much as in AZ.

Re: Another Big Fire
Yet another night of strong winds and new fires erupting everywhere. Power is out here, no ETA so I have most stuff shutdown. And no heat in the house since the HVAC isn't on the batteries. Fun times!

Re: Another Big Fire
Here we've got some of the effects from they call a Polar Vortex (just because, everything needs a dramatic name lol) A mass of arctic air, bringing cold temperatures and winds. It's going to get much colder towards the weekend (It's -15C or about 5F right now)
So... that is probably going to drive your winds for a while too since it's a massive differential elsewhere.
I hope your power comes back. Never thought you'd need a gas heater in Califuckingfornia, eh?
