They are probably shittier now than ever, but I've seen a lot of failed Semengate (that's a Bitbenderism lol!) drives in my travels. I personally had a 2 Tb one fail and I bought the same one as a replacement due to local availability. So far (in the old computer) that one is still going strong.

Contrast that with WD Black mechanicals, I've had incredible longevity with those. My main boot drive (and /storage partition) in the old computer is a 1 Tb Black that hasn't had so much as a read retry (S.M.A.R.T. data) for 15 years, since 2009.

My worst experiences were Maxtor drives in the 2000's though.

Speaking of Maxtor, look what I found when clearing out the last of my old junk. These are just the empty boxes.

CompUSA (the branding on the 2nd box) is long gone, they used to have a big store near where I used to live.

I remember the first hard drive I ever bought was a Maxtor - I think 40g. I bought it at costco. It would have been around 2000 and I was using Win98SE.

Around that same time (2000) a bunch of us at PC911 were getting in on a deal on a 40 GB drive from I think Office Depot. I don't remember what the price was other than it was a great deal at the time. I was dual booting Windows 2000 & Windows 98SE (for DOS games) then.

I rhink it was a couple years after that, 2002 or 2003'ish, that the bad streak of Maxtor drives were in circulation. I mean, get one, and can't even partition it. Go back to the store and buy another one (can't wait for RMA... it was for a job) and that one fails too. The third one was the charm. The two I got back (refurbs I presume) didn't last long either.

I'm pretty sure it was these. That's what they looked like, and I remember the 40L0 in the model number (6E040L0). It was ominous. A lot of those went in the garbage, I replaced several.
