No Mans Sky is still at it

Post by Grogan »

LOL! Not long ago, they put out a big "Worlds" Edition update that (supposedly... I haven't gotten far enough to really see) fixes the boring planet repetition thing. My biggest problem with this game is that they keep changing things out from under foot and keep pushing large updates. So I just stopped installing it because every time I did, it would happen again. It's not a game I would play all that frequently, but I'd like to get back to it once in a while without all that disruption for an 8+ year old game.

So I thought this would be a good time to nail it down and re-bought it on GoG. Now there's a new "Aquarius" Edition. They added... fishing to the game

Fishing rods, fish traps and of course fish to catch on various worlds. There is a fair bit of underwater shit in that game (creatures to scan, subs, bases etc.), I guess it fits. I wouldn't care about that, but they also added a fishing skiff vehicle. I might like that on water worlds, for you get "milestones" for scanning planetary creatures. You have to get them all to get the milestone, and some are under water. So I could use my skiff as a platform instead of swimming from the nearest island I can land my ship on. Since it's a platform, the skiff, I'm sure I can operate my hand scanner.

They've got some visuals of it here

Since I have played it all of twice since starting a new game with my GoG edition, I'll just wait until they have this on GoG and install it, then I'll start a new game. I should be able to stabilize on that version then.

It looks pretty good now. I'll have to install it again, Steam shows that I last played it Feb 2nd 2019 and I didn't do much in it then.

So GoG had the new Aquarius Edition packaged up by the time I got up today (11'ish). I just physically deleted the game directory and the game data (Appdata/Roaming/Hello Games) and started over with the fresh Gog installer. I'm just starting, so I haven't done any fishing yet

However, in the Custom settings, along with turning off all the survival crap and damage etc. there's an "Autocatch" setting for the fishing which eliminates the timed button presses and stuff. Good. I probably only want to unlock the fishing skiff or whatever I have to do anyway (don't see it in my vehicle bay menu, but I was only on the first planet that had no water)

Anyway, with GoG I can stabilize on this. When I get invested in this playthrough I don't have to disrupt it with changes and new shit. Nobody is updating this but me. Another benefit of the standalone GoG installers is that there is no network functionality. You need the Galaxy client for your game to be tied in to that. I don't even have a Network settings to turn off the setting that allows other players to join and fuck up your game. My galaxy is my own, there will be no already discovered systems etc.

This guy hasn't stopped, now there's a new "Cursed" Edition. I thought, I'll just download the patches, but there have been two updates to the Aquarius edition since I installed it. I'd have to update from 5.10, to 5.11, to 5.12 and then Cursed Edition 5.20 and finally to 5.21. That's more downloading than just getting the full Cursed 5.21 edition

Again, I haven't gotten very far so I'm just going to nuke everything and try again. I haven't got much incentive to play this, having Starfield, but eventually I will. Probably by then I'll have to get a new edition of No Man's Sky.
