These are motors that allow some species of bacteria to move around.

It's amazing how the complex chemistry works. The Universe is a strange place, where constructs like this form, powered by ion transfer. We owe it all to weird physics.

Note, however, that doesn't have to last very long. It only needs to work for a few hours (e.g. 12 hour life cycle before they fission) vs. things like our chambered pump. It wouldn't be practical for us to have flagellar locomotion coming out of our asses, it wouldn't last a day. That'll be why higher lifeforms use muscles for locomotion :-)
