Android Stupidity

Post by Zema Bus »

I updated my Android phone tonight (Pixel 6), and afterwards went back in to see the date of the security updates (June 5th). But then I was stuck on that screen in settings, there was no means of backing out to the main settings menu, gestures didn't work, except to exit settings altogether. But if I exited and launched settings again I was right back on the updates screen. Force closing settings was out, because that function is in settings, and inaccessible while I was stuck on another settings screen. I was going to just restart the phone, but couldn't get to the reboot/shutdown menu, it's not as simple to reboot or shutdown these newer Android phones as it used to be. Usually I can get to it from the drop down screen but I wasn't seeing it anywhere. While I was searching for it I saw something in the drop down screen saying "1 app running" so I tapped on it, and the main settings menu appeared! So then I searched for how to re-enable the navigation buttons so this doesn't happen again. It's under System Navigation. This reminds me why I don't like phones all that much.

I like when they get EOL, and don't get updates anymore (just apps).

Android used to be better back when I first got a phone. Android 4.x I think.

I have that same Pixel 6 Zema, and I got the same update a few days ago which was dated June 5th. Thankfully, I didn't suffer any of those gyrations. I changed it to the 3 button navigation when I got it. I found that 'gesture nav thing to be really unreliable and useless if you have a freeze up.
I bought this pixel because I thought: "me thinking" pure latest Android, no Samsung bloatware etc. But the truth is it is just as bloated as the rest, but it's google bloatware. Also, although it is a solidly built phone, the UI and actual operation of the phone and screen sensitivity is far inferior to my previous LG and Samsung phones. I won't get another pixel.
Correction: mine is the Pixel 7

I didn't really finish shitting here yet... I was groggy and needed to go to sleep.

However, what PISSES ME THE FUCK OFF, are these vendors taking Microsoft lessons on changing the OS and UI out from underfoot, mid cycle. Your navigation buttons shouldn't have changed with an "android update" on an existing device.

Even on an older phone Android constantly fought against me when they'd introduce changes like automatically removing app permissions from things you haven't used in a certain time, with no global setting to turn that off. Here's the thing I don't use ANY app frequently enough to not have these actions taken. Android updates always seem to bring me disconnects like that.

Probably the most off-pissing change they ever made, of all time, was changing the access method to PTP (picture transfer protocol) to make it harder for people to get at the system. It used to be so simple, plug it in and access its drives with usb-storage.

Google... Microsoft's bastard, inbred step-cousin.

Yep, that's something I really hate too. wish they could just leave the fucking thing alone once they sell it.

They must be following Apples lead again, Apple has been known for not allowing access to the file system on iOS. Same with the elimination of headphone jacks & removable/replaceable batteries, and chargers no longer included, all stuff Android copied from Apple. They even made fun of Apple for ditching the headphone jack before dropping it themselves.

The PTP protocol access came some time ago, I think it might have been Android 5. Before that you could plug it in and mount all of its drives.

I hate Apple, but this is crap too.
