freedesktop gitlab... it begins

Today, I can't build my proton or dxvk (and I presume vkd3d-proton) because some of the submodules pulled with git come from gitlab.freedesktop.org, even though the projects themselves are hosted on github. My proton-tkg build failed on dxvk and I was all what the fuck, this never fails. There was a new release of dxvk yesterday that I wanted. So I went to build dxvk by itself to more easily see why it wasn't finding vulkan/vulkan.h and it's because it couldn't pull submodules.
This is going to make it hard to function because so many packages are built with git sources now and many come from freedesktop's gitlab. It's going to cause chaos for developers more, and my guess would be that when the repos come back, they'll be swamped with people syncing their changes.
Ironically, Microsoft's github has been the best one to work with, in terms of the user interfaces, policies and speed and reliability. It always has been more of a wait for freedesktop's gitlab to respond, I've noticed, and a royal pain in the ass to register to be able to post bug reports (separate registration hoops). So I mostly don't bother. I'm registered to be able to post mesa bug reports but that's the only one.
Freedesktop is losing their hosting for their gitlab repos and have to transition to another and migrate the data.
