Re: keyboard and mouse combo
Correct... you win the bologna

Re: keyboard and mouse combo
I was somnolent when I said that, and while it sounds funny enough on its own, it needs some context as it's probably pretty local. My paternal grandmother used to say that, for back in the 1930's during depression times, a raffle prize was often a big bologna.
Re: keyboard and mouse combo
I meant to come back and say that I dropped this:
That is not without consequences. It was fine everywhere outside of XFCE, and I thought it didn't affect games (indeed it mostly doesn't, that shit gets programmed by the game anyway, and there are sensitivity settings if that changes etc.).
HOWEVER, in my Mass Effect game, there's a little minigame puzzle that's a circle of rotating blocks. It's what is used to unlock/hack/salvage anything in the game. Even (completely optionally) mining mineral deposits on planets lol. You have to frogger-like step through them using your mouse. Now, the mouse rotates around the outer edge of the circle as you advance with your mouse clicks. BUT, there is "gravity" and the further you get from the origin, the harder it is to control. THIS mechanic got fucked up by that XY transform and it made it more difficult or even impossible for some of the expert ones (that you wouldn't even be allowed to do unless you bring the right people with the right skill points on your team in ME1).
My reasoning is, if I found one thing affected, it won't be the last. (It does make sense that this could cause problems in some applications where coordinates are important). Better to adjust the operator of the mouse.
The mouse speed, within the limit of my control, is actually pretty good without that. I'm already used to it... to the point where if I increased it I'd have to get used to that again
Not sure if I'll ever get used to such a small keyboard, but I am quite happy with this keyboard and mouse set. It exhibits good behaviour.
Also, those mouse latency messages on the root console are completely gone, I haven't seen one since I got this mouse. Not a single missed keystroke or anomaly (as was the case with some other shit) either. So mission accomplished with respect to that, it was my intent to correct those issues. Morever, ESD cannot bother this if I forget to discharge when I come back to my desk. Even if it affected the peripherals, switching them off and on would correct it. The business end is the receiver.
It is, however, not at all related to that "DCMUB" firmware issue I'm having. I was hoping it was being caused by the mouse but the behaviour of the mouse is the symptom. It's not only the mouse, it's that the system can't process frames until that settles down. Then it works again briefly etc. once that happens. Good thing it's completely avoidable, for now. I haven't done much testing, I built a stable mesa but haven't tried to reproduce. Faults get me down, I don't like seeing them. I suspect if it's anything within my control, it will be libdrm where the problem started and I'll try that next. The X server does use mesa though, for 2D acceleration (mesa can even break TTF font rendering in X11).

Re: keyboard and mouse combo
Well, I've been using this Logitech keyboard/mouse combo for some time now and it's been OK (I STILL have trouble with this small keyboard though). The mouse seems to go through a lot of batteries.
The keyboard isn't bad on the batteries (I've only replaced them once since the original ones in the box) but the mouse seems to go through an AA battery every 3 weeks (it only takes one, most I've had use two, and I prefer that for weight). Mind you, I don't turn it off when not in use, but I shouldn't have to because it goes to sleep. It turns off the LED etc.
Maybe they are shitty batteries. They are Neveready Energizers, but from a bulk pack. They aren't completely dead, but the mouse stops working when the voltage drops to 1V (according to my multimeter) and sometimes I don't even get much warning. Today I noticed the status light (that only comes on briefly when it wakes) turned red but last time I thought my computer was frozen at first. The keyboard worked, so I turned my mouse off and on and the light was red and I had to change the battery.

Re: keyboard and mouse combo
I only got just over 2 weeks out of this battery. I'm going to try another brand (e.g. a freshly dated smaller pack of Duracell or something) and if this is still going on, this mouse is going to go. That's pretty expensive, feeding it a battery every two weeks. It's also a pain in the ass. Coupled with me typing the wrong keyboard shortcut to switch workspaces, again I thought my computer was frozen at first when the mouse stopped working. It just stopped dead, while using Firefox with no warning.
Switching VT's worked, where I was able to kill Firefox (thinking I just needed to kill the browser I was stuck in before input would respond again... that's happened a long time ago), but switching back again my mouse was dead. That's when it occurred to me it was the mouse battery again (Sure enough, I turned it off and on again, and the light went red for a split second and went out), but why couldn't I switch desktops? (because I was using IceWM's keyboard shortcut, CTRL-ALT-2, not XFCE's which is CTRL-F2 to switch to workspace 2 lol)
The batteries aren't completely dead, they are reading around 1V on my multimeter but I guess the IR optical LED stops working.

Re: keyboard and mouse combo
I have a Jelly Comb wireless keyboard and mouse that I use on my TV computer, I've had them 5 years and I don't remember ever changing the batteries. To be fair though, I don't use that machine for long stretches and the mouse and keyboard turn themselves off when there has been no activity for a certain amount of time.
Re: keyboard and mouse combo
Yeah, fuck, I've had cordless mice before and the batteries last a long time. It's only one AA battery though. I don't turn it off when not in use, but I shouldn't have to, it goes into a sleep mode. There wouldn't be power going to the LED or anything then. It takes a bit of movement to wake it up, and the green light comes on, so that's working.
Re: keyboard and mouse combo
So I finally had it to death with that Logitech combo. The mouse going through expensive batteries, but also the keyboard has started to make poor contact with the batteries. They buckle inside the housing and lose contact. I've been having to use a piece of doubled up electrical tape to put more pressure on the batteries, but even that malfunctions after a few days and I have to move it around. The letters on the keys are wearing off already too. Last night it kept interrupting me while gaming and I vowed not one more day. I got in my car and went to a local computer store and bought a wired set. They had mostly Logitech, so I bought a cheapo "K33" combo. Wired, because fuck batteries.
It's probably been sitting on a shelf for 10 years, it lists Windows ME, XP, 2000, Vista and Windows 7 support on the box. Also the price tag looks old, and it was $45.99 even at that expensive store.
I'm no good at taking pictures with my phone, but I found this product here with pictures and specifications and stuff.

The keyboard is crap. Moreover, a key popped off just sliding it out of the bag, the minus key on the numpad. I had trouble getting it to snap back on, it doesn't stay right. It's on correctly and it works, but feels like it will easily pop off again. I don't use the numpad so I don't care. It otherwise works OK and while I'm not happy with the keystroke feedback, it is actually better than that shallow logitech. I don't expect this keyboard to last long... the way the keys press, I would expect them to start failing to pop back up soon. Keys may pop off if I'm rough with it while gaming.
The mouse, on the other hand, is substantial! It's weighty (the way I like it), and of good construction. There's a metal backing plate on the bottom even (overengineered? lol). The scroll wheel is firmly notched and doesn't move when middle clicked. It's a good shape for my hands, and it has a DPI button right on top to cycle through resolutions. The second DPI setting seems about right for me. I haven't found a way to turn off the LEDs though, but oh well, it's attractive and doesn't pulse too vigorously.
Good score on the mouse for that money, even if I'm going to have to ditch the keyboard soon.
It shows up like this:
I went and looked up the USB IDs, idVendor=4e53, idProduct=5406 in the online database and it says "USB OPTICAL MOUSE"... gee, thanks

Re: keyboard and mouse combo
The A key on this keyboard "lags". I thought I noticed it right away while I was typing, some of my a's weren't registering. But I though it was just the way I was pressing the key. It just takes more force to make electrical contact I guess (I'm not having any trouble typing a's right now). It manifests in game as a delay when turning left, especially when the w key is pressed.
This is a horrible keyboard for gaming. Every keyboard I buy sucks in some way.
I think I'm going to try my old IBM keyboard on the PS/2 to USB converter dongle again and see if I can get along with that. If I thought THAT had latency, it's still leaps and bounds better than using this. It does advertise some strange shit and has the potential to confuse input device detection, but that's just theoretical, that doesn't actually cause me any problems. I was blaming it for some other problems, but that turned out to be X11 and display power management when not using a compositor.
I'd take this crap back to the store, but I like the mouse. This keyboard will be fine attached to the old computer, as I don't use a keyboard over there very often anymore (mostly accessed with SSH and NFS etc. these days). It was really a waste of my beloved IBM keyboard sitting there, unused.

Re: keyboard and mouse combo
Just think of it as a free keyboard that came with your mouse
I'm just using cheap boring Logitech wired keyboards for both my game machine and main machine. I don't think I paid more than $12 each for them on Amazon a number of years ago.

Re: keyboard and mouse combo
That's exactly how I'm looking at it, I'd have been happy to pay $45 for a good mouse (probably couldn't get one this well made anymore). I've paid more for worse (I had a $60 logitech mouse once that didn't last long... and the scroll wheel was shit too. One of the feet came off right away too).
I really like this mouse. With my good keyboard back, and this mouse I was Mr. Headshot tonight. What a difference having better control makes.
