One nice thing to say about Windows 11: Virtual Desktops

Post by Grogan »

It has the best implementation of virtual desktops that Windows has ever had yet. Finally, they are starting to get how that's supposed to work. It's still not "great", but it was always a disconnect before, where you had to go through too many stupid clicks to get to it, it was easier to just use a single desktop and minimize programs (third party shell replacements did a better job if you wanted virtual desktops)

Now, there is a sort of pager with menu hover that shows your virtual desktops. I easily created 4 of them with the + signs and it keeps that setting. It's easy enough to switch just by hovering over the desktop switching icon on the taskbar and click on the desktop you want. You can drag them around to make Desktop 2 Desktop 1 etc. too.

Still, the keyboard shortcuts for switching virtual desktops leave something to be desired. Windows Key+Ctrl+Arrow Keys to cycle between them. That's too many keys to press, and I wouldn't even have a Windows key if I were using my trusty old IBM keyboard. Umm, blow it out your ass.

I think there's a "Move To" in right click menus for moving program windows to other desktops, but you can't click and drag windows like you can on a typical workspace pager.

I'll have to check it out, that's something I didn't look at in Windows 11. With it working better than in Windows 10, when my employer eventually upgrades my work laptop to Windows 11 (I don't think they'll trust the working plebs to it) that would be useful.
