LCD Refresh Rate
It's mostly a pointless thing on an LCD display, it's only emulated for synchronization purposes (it's inherent in how software talks to a display). It's not going to make your display look any better, there's no shimmering or scan lines. It's only if vsync comes into play (we generally don't mess w...

Re: Firefox and Librewolf
I upgraded Arch to LLVM 18.1.2 (and rebuilt Rust against it) yesterday. Due to my recent revelation that static runtime code is significant, I'm now building those things a second time with each other. Arch takes too long with LLVM upgrades, they've only recently upgraded to LLVM 17 a few weeks ago....

Re: Slackware-Current
Here's another wonderful thing about UEFI bioses. They can be easily compromised. First of all, shit can be dumped in the EFI partition. One example is the boot logo image file, some biosen copy that there and it's read from there at boot time. Guess what? The image loaders use vulnerable code that ...

Re: Slackware-Current
UEFI sure is a stupid way to boot. While it gets rid of some legacy limitations, it's a regression in other ways. Imagine, an operating system's boot loader can screw up EFI boot entries so bad you can't boot anything. Nope, no legit way to clear that data. A BIOS flash might erase that NVRAM. (CMOS...

Re: So... I said AVX can be poison
I did a clean build of LLVM 18.1.2 on my LFS (no -march at all) and then built it again with itself to make sure there were no "nehalem" instructions in my libraries. I then did the same with Rust 1.77.0 (I link my Rust statically too so it doesn't break when I upgrade LLVM) I'll be able t...

Re: Starfield
Well, with the "tgm" god mode, where I don't have to worry about health, or oxygen, or weight, or how long I can sprint, or taking damage in space combat or pretty much anything, I love the living shit out of this game. All those nifty weapons I'm picking up, I can actually use them as muc...

Re: Firefox and Librewolf
OK now... Firefox 124.0.1 builds and profiles with LLVM 18.1.2 now (and Rust 1.77 builds with LLVM 18.1). Firefox still can't PGO+LTO build with SSE4.2 though (linker barfs on final libxul) which means it can use "-march=core2 -mtune=whatever" at best. I haven't done that WASI shit yet, bu...

So... I said AVX can be poison
I'm going to mention a few ways that it has been for me, with the intent of advising caution when using -march= to compile things. This could apply to more than just AVX, but the use of -march= in general. I used to get away with -march=nehalem for bloody everything, but alderlake is not a safe bet ...

I'm glad I noticed, then. (I wasn't sure if maybe some KDE power manager might have pulled that in for you or not) The default should be to intercept and do a shutdown command, HOWEVER, I have seen "power managers" override that. XFCE power manager for one (I removed that, smeagol hates it...

Oh hey, I should say or remind (I know I had this somewhere at BBF). Note that if you're compiling or something, the argv of each of those ...

I forgot to install acpid, Arch doesn't install that itself. (should check... install and "systemctl enable acpid.service" if you don't have it) I went to test a power button shutdown and it didn't work. I'm not sure why else I should care about acpid personally (I do want acpi power butto...

Well, they win. Amazon comes at a human cost (and I hate that about them) but there's no better service than that and I'd be an idiot not to use them. The Prime membership fees are chicken feed too, if you buy a lot of stuff.

Music we like
It's time for a music thread, we don't have one yet. I'll kick this off with something I discovered randomly in the youtube feed. I'd never heard of them before. I really liked this, with little squawk box amplifiers and distortion pedals... it makes me wish I was young again. (i.e. this is like bei...

This: qt5ctblack.jpg Though I have to admit I hacked on "darker.conf" (/usr/share/qt5ct/colors/darker.conf if installed by Arch package, or probably /usr/share/qt6ct in that case) to get that jet black. You should too. I don't have any KDE shit installed, just QT for applications, and with...

Re: Dolphin Under Mate Desktop
What would stop me from, say, using Dolphin outside of Plasma/KDE now is that the processes and daemons never go away when you close the application. Those frameworks will be running. I don't care if I have 64 Gb of RAM, I'm old school. The less software running the better. You also have to watch th...

Re: Dolphin Under Mate Desktop
That does look good. I don't hate Dolphin as a file manager (I just don't like it lol). I mean, all of those file managers are too graphically confusing for me because I'm used to my X File Explorer for approaching 25 years (it was X Wincommander back then) You should be able to change those alterna...

Amazon return
It looks like Amazon is THE place to buy hardware. I've been happy with the shipping (I'd say exemplary for around here) but the return procedure has gotten so easy I'm gobsmacked. I was going to just initiate an RMA and probably procrastinate for a day or two as I'm wont to do but it was so easy I ...

It sure is a disconnect, I was pretty pissed off setting up Dad's laptop. (though I was better prepared for it than he was lol)
This is actually my first computer that's never had a Windows install on it. (never going to... it's too detestable now, unlike Windows 7)

That's a lot of blue coming from those fans, even with the stock fan in the center. Notice how it cancels out the red in your purple motherboard extender cable. I had a more in-depth poke at the fan settings in my bios, and NOW I understand that (what I thought was a) bogus low 900 RPM'ish value from fan3 (fans connected to the hub). While I had Smart Fan Control off for both CPU and SYS fans, and while the CPU fan was running at 100% (it's simply a 1500 RP...

Well, damnit, I made one teeny, tiny little mistake in my otherwise perfect surgery. I had yanked my CPU fan connector from the board to tuck it behind something else, and plugged it back into the pump_fan header. It was working, but it became "fan2" and it was running at slightly lower RP...

It's too easy... for everyone else to play. That's the only reason they'd complain about "too many health materials" (they cut that down... there aren't as many of them to pick up in game anymore either) and wanting to put a cooldown on it. If they are that "good" then why are th...
