Re: Arch Linux 2024
Another thing I was grandfathered into having was python2. Arch ditched that probably a year ago. (I still need it for some builds and older software) That was an old distro package and I didn't even have a PKGBUILD for it, so I went to AUR and they had one (with patches from gentoo even... it's an ...

Re: Need a different case
Another thing about this. I have aggressive motherboard settings, "XMP Profile 1" which affects CPU clock and memory speed. (I want my memory running at 3200 MHz). It reports a 5 GHz processor. Now... LINUX, is VERY aggressive (at least with only "performance" governors etc.). It...

Re: Need a different case
While it didn't help with the static touch (maybe I'm really some sort of Marvel villain and I don't know it yet lol), covering the top like that did help with air flow in the case. I just did a mesa build (ninja -j24) and while I wouldn't say the temps were good, cores were only spiking up to 100C,...

Re: Need a different case
Sonofabitch... does static ever travel. I got some rubber carpet underlay and tested it with my multitester. It is non conductive, even with the probes a millimeter apart, and pressed on either side of it. It didn't work. OK, not thick enough, so I put two, and three pieces (just for testing). Nope,...

Re: Need a different case
Fuck... so even water cooling would only keep the temps around 88C for these CPUs while compiling ("heavy content creation workloads"), from what I just read. I guess I'll just compile with -j8 or something so cores can juggle more (still have to fix the cooling though).

Re: Need a different case
The cooler is working, just too poorly for my uses (I think I can remount it without taking the board out of the case, as long as I can get at the fan clips with my hands). I didn't even realize I had a problem because it idles with the cores between about 37C and 42C and it comes down instantly whe...

Re: Need a different case
It has feet on it, I don't know if they are rubber. It's on a wooden table top though (just the frame is metal... it's a folding office table. Yes, that does seem like a shitty CPU fan. It's a big housing, too.Though no matter what you get, it's a shitty clip mounting system on the radiator that wou...

Re: Simple Hard Drive Swap That Wasn't
I ordered this PSU tester https://www.amazon.ca/Supply-Tester-Computer-Connectors-Screen/dp/B0CK61ZSZN/ We'll see if it's any good. It should make it easier. I also ordered an 8g tube of Arctic MX4. I would have gone with MX6, but I'm not in the mood to try anything new. (and the MX4 comes with a ni...

Re: Need a different case
I've got a big black, tall, ugly Antec case I might try to use. The computer that used to be on the other desk (also X58 board and nehalem corei7). I could take the guts out and use that... ugly, but practical if the motherboard mounting works out (should... it's a full tower case). My good old syst...

Need a different case
This case has some issues for me. I didn't think they were serious, but I noticed some things that are dire. Firstly, the board doesn't really go in the case quite right. It fits up and mounts properly, but the rear i/o ports are too far forward (inside the case) to get the i/o shield on. I don't ca...

Re: Simple Hard Drive Swap That Wasn't
Oh your bios wouldn't know about your display setup, "init display first" is for the graphics adapter. (all the same, it should be set right). The only reason I have "multi monitor" setting is because it's the built in Intel graphics, and the multi monitor keeps it enabled so you...

Re: Simple Hard Drive Swap That Wasn't
Fucking PSU's these days... suffering Hell. I'm going to order a power supply tester of some sort, it's not that easy to swap them out for testing anymore with all those connections. Pretty much any time I touch hardware I get more than I was expecting. So you get nothing until X starts on a cold bo...

Re: New Kernel
Huh, I was getting a nasty oops type warning (kernel tainting) like RIP: 0010:prefill_possible_map on CPU0 with a bunch of call trace oops spaghetti. It was during initializing CPUs, but it went on to do the right thing after, enabling 24 CPUs (only 8 of mine have hyperthreading) so I was pretty sur...

That looks like good pizza they are eating, too (charred on the edges etc.)
It sounds scary, but if having an esophageal cyborg implant lets you eat pizza again (or simply eat and sleep and stuff)...

Re: Arch Linux 2024
It had been so long that I didn't know Arch dropped my mail program, Sylpheed. I have to head out soon and I needed to check my email, so I thought I'd take a shortcut and just install the distro package. It's gone! (at some point in the last 4 years or so lol). So I had to take 20 seconds to compil...

Sorry about your heart burn. Yours isn't "normal" heartburn, but if I had it, it's worse laying down than anything. Acid reflux can have me puking into my lungs too if full enough, when sleeping laying down (so I don't go to bed full anymore) With gigabit+ LAN, I guess the frames would str...

id-cooling X25 Thermal GLUE
Yes, I said glue  I tried that paste last night, but while I was spreading, it started to go immediately stringy and harden. I wiped that the fuck off right away (with methanol) while I could, and went with my 18 year old tube of Arctic Silver (which is still fine, stored standing upright in go...
Far Cry 6
Well, I can start a Far Cry 6 thread now  I've only just gotten through the linear, cut-sceney parts but it's been pretty nice. I can play it on Ultra, with 165 Hz Vsync (though I'm certainly not getting 165 FPS at those settings lol) and it's pretty smooth. I'm at the Libertad camp and have a...

Re: Arch Linux 2024
Forgot to say... no, arch does NOT boot with UUID nomenclature without a properly constructed initramfs (with all the right hooks or nothing). It's kernel panic. I had to change the rootfs in fstab to /dev/nvme1n1p1 (I left the others UUID for now just in case it shifts again) and in the grub entry ...

Re: Arch Linux 2024
Arch got me in the ass again... I've been keeping my own firmware blobs for so long that I didn't know Arch compresses the firmware now. I build a kernel and amdgpu was fatally dying. WTF. Compressed firmware support in kernel. I was just going through and it stuck out like a sore thumb... hey, that...
