Re: Gathering parts for new build

Everything is on the way now. I ordered the Asrock card from Newegg, and the 27 inch Scepter monitor from Amazon, with a displayport cable (never used that before, but we'll give it a whirl) I decided to go to the bank today and secure some more funding for this project, it was time to get this show...

Re: Gathering parts for new build

It looks like Newegg has a better selection of video cards. I just looked at their (U.S.) reseller rating and it's very high (4.97/5 in the last 6 months) It's Assrock, and it's only a 12 Gb model, but I can live with the $469.99 CAD cost of that one. ASRock Radeon RX 6700 XT Challenger D Gaming Gra...

Re: Gathering parts for new build

Also, when I said they could pry this IBM clickey clack keyboard from my stiff, dead, fingers I meant it. StarTech. USB to PS/2 Adapter https://www.amazon.ca/Startech-USBPS2PC-Adapter-Keyboard-Mouse/dp/B00028OP2Y/ That's an "active" adapter (converter) that translates the i/o. The keyboard...

Re: Gathering parts for new build

There was one left in stock (Amazon Prime). I should have that Antec High Current Gamer Gold Series-HCG1000 PSU tomorrow. I should have the ID-COOLING SE-224-XTS Black CPU Cooler by Thursday, but the red Fractal Design case is coming from some Deal Targets seller, estimated delivery March 11 (Monday...

Re: Gathering parts for new build

I guess Corsair has gotten too silly with their designs of cases and PSU's to match. That's a shame, because they make some of the best stuff. I've had good times with the 3 Antec PSU's that I've had (still have 2 computers with 14 y/o Antec TruePower, had another computer but I sold it to a friend)...

Re: Gathering parts for new build

Thanks for the pictures, that helps a lot so see the case with the stuff in it. It shows me that one of those new Corsair power supplies isn't going to work out, there isn't much clearance on the sides. That's going to have the octopus of modular connections and they are all going to have to bend to...

Re: Borderlands 3 online issues

So this is a wide spread problem and isn't on your end. It probably used to work. Know what cunts like this do? When they have a successful game that just won't die and people are still playing that 8 years later instead of buying new games, they degrade the servers and make it shitty so people will...

Re: Borderlands 3 online issues

I've never played Borderland 3 online so I can't say if it's working, but is it the same if they try to connect to your game? I'm assuming it's a Steam hookup (shouldn't run afoul of firewalling rules?)

OK, so the ID-COOLING it is then. https://www.amazon.ca/ID-COOLING-SE-224-XTS-Cooler-Heatpipes-LGA1700/dp/B0BC13DSJZ/ Unfortunately from Amazon, they are all "Extended delivery time" because they are fullfilled from outside Canada. So I'll have to see if I can do better from another source...

Re: Gathering parts for new build

Maybe I don't actually need a full tower case anymore. I'm not going to have hard drives and a bunch of cabling. If anything I think video cards aren't as long as they were when I bought this Antec case (which I chose because it had the largest clearance for video cards of all the cases I looked at)...

and yes, that's another thing. These desktop environments step on each others' configuration these days. That's because they dump shit to ~/.config and friends messily rather than self contained in their own directories. Back in the old days all of KDE's configuration was stored in ~/.kde which coul...

Re: Gathering parts for new build

The cooler I was going to buy is "mechanically incompatible" with my motherboard. Good thing Noctua has specific motherboard compatibility listings, I almost ordered that today. That means the bolt holes won't jibe. There's no backing plate on the model I was going to buy, it just bolts on...

Re: Gathering parts for new build

It looks like the video card is bust for now. I'm not paying $600 for a mid range card that won't be that much better than my RX 570 that cost $250'ish. They can ALL fuck off. We're talking $1200 CAD (or $1000 if I buy an off brand like "power color") for anything that would be a serious u...

Re: Plasma 6

What about Panels in the KDE Control Center, if no desktop right click? You could probably add a new panel in there. Good that they fixed the add shortcut behaviour though. That would have been a UI disconnect. I don't think I'll install Plasma again though, I hate the mess it makes and it's really ...

Re: Gathering parts for new build

So it's looking like the Corsair cases are impractical. What I didn't realize was that there are no places to access optical drives. Nothing but fan bays in the front panel. I assumed that would open up or something, but he said no. He couldn't have an optical drive if he wanted to. I'm looking at c...

Good. Well, not good that it had you chasing your tail, but good that it wasn't something current. I've never set up Arch on EFI before, I would imagine I'll create a FAT32 partition along with my Linux ones. I'll use Grub, installed to the EFI partition and then the kernels will just go in /boot li...

Linux 6.7.8 now https://cdn.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v6.x/ChangeLog-6.7.8 ONE change, in a driver I use, but wouldn't affect me because I wouldn't hit that config scenario (no build failure) fs/ntfs3: fix build without CONFIG_NTFS3_LZX_XPRESS commit c8e314624a1666ed2eec28549713021a8ec801e9 upstre...

Re: HP's Printer Rental

I have access to a printer if I really need it. It's on the network if I could be bothered to configure a printer. I used to print a few pages at income tax time, but I don't even need to do that anymore. I keep (and back up) text files for information. Touchscreens aren't for greasy hands (or greas...

Yeah, I need a place to bitch about Arch

What kind of drive... don't tell me it was a NVME that failed again. (just when I'm starting to have confidence in the technology lol). Well, I think the problems you had were faulty firmware that had fault triggers.

Yeah, I had various "associations" that put me at odds with the police in the past. That's all gone now though, I've nothing to be adversarial about. Also, the cops in this town are very nice, I think it's a requirement now. Our Provincial police (OPP) are very professional, you wouldn't l...

Ahh good idea, we need an ongoing thread for stuff like this. So true about USB. Unless it's got a raised dot on the connector to indicate the up side, I always seem to get it wrong the first time. Yeah, it's been a long time for Fing. I hope he's OK. It is the internet though, a lot of the time you...

Re: HP's Printer Rental

I don't use a printer at all (I hate them and don't want one) personally but we stopped buying colour lasers. We had a Samsung that was nice, but the colour toner was expensive. It didn't prevent us from printing black, or from printing with that colour missing from the blend, but it wasn't practica...

Yeah, I've been surprised at how long I go without booting up that Arch VM and it survives the updates. That's pure distro packages only though (for a dev box). I forget what it was, but I did have to manually do something once. I'm going to be installing Arch on brand new hardware for the first tim...

Wow, that's bad. I didn't know you had cops like that there too. We generally don't (they wouldn't be for long... they'd be in prison if they fired through a doorway like that). Most police here have University degrees. It's not a requirement, but most do before they go off to police academies. I wa...

Re: Gathering parts for new build

The courier did come just as I was about to pull out of the driveway today, with a very small box. I didn't even open it, it felt like just the box of screws I ordered. So when I got home tonight, I found that it had the CPU (very small packaging when there's no stock cooler), the 2 RAM kits, the NV...
